John Whyte-Melville - Needlepoint Canvas Artwork

This intricate and beautiful needlepoint has been hand stitched by Beth Bishoff Opgrand and is after the famous portrait of John Whyte-Melville of Bennochy and Strathkiness (1797-1883) painting by Sir Francis Grant. He's shown in his Captain's coat, holding his wood in his right hand with the Swilcan Bridge with golfers and the Royal and Ancient Clubhouse in the background. Melville is known as the "Father of the Club" and played an important role in the history of the game of golf. He became a member of the Royal & Ancient Club in 1816 and was elected Captain of the Club in 1823. He was key to the unification of the R&A and the Union Clubs and also laid the foundations stone of the clubhouse in 1853.
