Statue of a Golfer by W. Rolland

A plaster statue of a golfer circa 1890 by W. Rolland. The statue is considered to be Freddie Tait who is wearing a Tam O'Shanter and swinging a long nose golf club.

Frederick Guthrie Tait (1870-1900) was an amateur golfer and Scottish soldier. He won the Amateur Championship twice, in 1896 and again in 1898, by convincing margins. Over his short golf career, Tait recorded at least 28 tournament victories. He tied for third place in the Open Championship in both 1896 and 1897. He was killed in action in 1900 during the Boer War in South Africa.
