Hogan, Ben - Texas State Resolution
Born: August 13, 1912 in Dublin, TX.
Died: July 25, 1997
Ben Hogan ended many years as a contender when he finally won the Masters on April 8, 1951. A 38-year-old Ben Hogan shot a final round 68 to win his first Masters Golf Tournament by two strokes over Robert (Skee) Riegel. This was his tenth attempt to win at Augusta National, finishing second in 1942 and 1946. His 280 total for the four rounds was one stroke off the tournament record shot by Ralph Guldahl in 1939 and Claude Harmon in 1948.
1953 was Ben Hogan's finest year, and one of the finest years ever played by any professional golfer. Hogan won the 1953 Masters in dominant fashion, he broke par everyday; shooting 70 — 69 — 66 — 69 to beat Ed "Porky" Oliver by five and set a new tournament record of 274. Hogan eclipsed the previous record held by Ralph Guldahl and Claude Harmon by 5 strokes. Hogan would go on the capture the U.S. Open and British Open and eventually won 5 of the 6 events he entered that year.
The Texas State Senate proclaimed a Ben Hogan day citing among it's many reasons "Whereas Ben Hogan has golfed his way into the hearts of millions through his winning of 54 major tournaments and displaying in each the indomitable spirit and clean sportsmanship that each Texan inherits from the men who have made Texas what it is today"
The resolution was adopted May 26th, 1953.
In addition to the Texas State Senate resolution this historic piece also contains a beautifully autographed photo of Ben Hogan.
