Hagen, Walter - Autographed Photo by Pietzcker

The flamboyant Walter Hagen - who with his colorful personality helped to draw attention and greater sponsorship to the game of golf. Gene Sarazen, a friend and rival of Hagen's, once commented, "All the players who have a chance to go after big money should say a silent prayer to Walter Hagen. It was Walter who made professional golf what it is."

Hagen's tally of 11 professional majors is third behind Jack Nicklaus (18) and Tiger Woods.He won the U.S. Open twice, and in 1922 he became the first native-born American to win the British Open, and won the Claret Jug three more times. He also won the PGA Championship a record-tying five times (all in match play), and the Western Open five times when it had near-major championship status. Hagen totaled 45 PGA wins in his career, and was a six-time Ryder Cup captain. The Masters Tournament, the newest major, was established in 1934, after his prime.

George Pietzcker was the premier golf photographer in the U.S. for the first half of the 20th century. Although many of his images have appeared in books and publications most were uncredited. Pietzcker's work is highly sought after by golf and photography collectors worldwide.

This striking image of Walter Hagen, taken by George Pietzcker, has been inscribed and signed by Hagen. The inscription reads: "To my dear friend "Bill" Frawley, my golfing pardner, Walter Hagen, Jan. 15th,1935"
William Frawley was an American stage entertainer and screen and television actor best known for playing landlord Fred Mertz in the famous American television sitcom I Love Lucy and Bub in the television comedy series My Three Sons.
