Ben Hogan ended many years as a contender when he finally won the Masters in 1951. This win also put Hogan in elite company with Gene Sarazen as the only men to win all of golf's major championships, the career Grand Slam. Hogan's final round 68 allowed him to catch Skee Riegel and win by 2 strokes.

1953 was Ben Hogan's finest year, and one of the finest years ever played by any professional golfer. Hogan won the 1953 Masters in dominant fashion, he broke par everyday; shooting 70 — 69 — 66 — 69 to beat Ed "Porky" Oliver by five and set a new tournament record of 274. Hogan eclipsed the previous record held by Ralph Guldahl and Claude Harmon by 5 strokes. Hogan would go on the capture the U.S. Open and British Open and eventually won 5 of the 6 events he entered that year.
