| THE STORY:
Jesse Ortiz, widely regarded as one of golf’s
premier golf club designers, joined with globally renowned
golf instructor Dave Pelz to create the Bobby Jones
- Pelz Wedge Collection by Jesse Ortiz, the most exciting
and performance-enhancing set of wedges in modern history.
The Bobby Jones - Pelz Wedge Collection combines Ortiz’
design prowess with Pelz’ mastery of short-game
strategy, creating technology and precision never before
seen in a wedge. The collection is the first set of
wedges manufactured by the surging Bobby Jones Golf
Company, of which Ortiz is Chief Designer.
With no significant design or production improvements
in the wedge category in years, the Bobby Jones - Pelz
Wedges have set a new standard for short-game play.
Each wedge in the collection is designed to USGA conformance
specifications, with technological superiority, such
as their revolutionary “facing-material”
design and ability to retain spin texture properties
for years, rather than months.
“I am very proud of the success and satisfaction
my breakthrough designs have brought to golfers over
the years,” said Oritz. “Now, with the Bobby
Jones - Pelz Wedge Collection, even more golfers will
enjoy improved playability in every part of their short
game. As a designer, that is always my ultimate goal,
and in this case it is the result of countless hours
of collaboration with my friend Dave Pelz.”
Pelz, golf’s foremost authority on the short
game and putting, has committed his working life to
research and teaching to help golfers worldwide lower
their scores. The game’s top playing professionals,
including Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh and Mike Weir,
rely on Pelz’s advice, while thousands of amateurs
attend his popular Scoring Game schools and clinics
each year.
“It is an honor to become part of the Bobby Jones
legend by working with golf’s most ingenious designer,
Jesse Ortiz,” said Pelz. “His passion for
the game, and for improving performance on the course,
has now resulted in these finely crafted tools.”
The Bobby Jones - Pelz Wedge Collection by Jesse Ortiz
includes the 52-degree Gap Wedge (available with four-degree
bounce), the 56-degree Sand Wedge (available with 10-degree
or 14-degree bounce), the 60-degree Lob Wedge (available
with a 4-degree or 8-degree bounce), and the 64-degree
Extra-lofted X Wedge (available with 4-degree bounce).
THE TECHNOLOGY:
“When one factors in golfers’ understandable
concerns about longevity, our new wedges will be superior
in performance and playability to all other wedges on
the market,” said Ortiz. “Do not be fooled
by the classic look of our new collection – no
other wedge incorporates so much technology.”
The club’s body is cast from a soft 302 stainless
steel. A pocket and deep set channels are milled to
accommodate the club’s wear-resistant Cronidur
30 face material. The channels behind the clubface-insert
remove substantial weight from the central section of
the body, allowing additional weight to be repositioned
to the sole for a low center-of-gravity.
The high-tech German alloy Cronidur 30 face material
– a remarkably wear-resistant metal alloy (often
used in industrial bearing assemblies and critical valve
components) – will maintain both face friction
and groove integrity far longer than conventional wedges,
thus providing consistently high backspin longevity.
With new USGA regulations on the horizon, wedge durability
will be more important than ever for maintaining shot
trajectory and control. The Cronidur 30 material is
milled to a USGA-conforming texture of 180 micro-inches,
creating a face texture and edge-groove radius perfect
for consistent shot making.
Many golfers do not realize that backspin longevity
is so fleeting that tour professionals replace their
wedges often throughout the golf season to keep ball
control and shot performance at the highest possible
level.
“These enduring wedges will help golfers hit
better scoring game shots, control their wedge distances
to tighter tolerances, and consistently shoot lower
scores,” said Pelz.
Using a proprietary design technique, Bobby Jones
- Pelz Wedges provide the perfect combination of soft-feeling
shots and extremely low face wear to produce a superior-performing
wedge, season after season. By applying heat and pressure
to a special structural bonding membrane, Ortiz facilitates
the release of an epoxy resin, which – upon cooling
– creates a bond between the club’s stainless
body and face material that is stronger than welding.
Upon curing, the membrane returns to its slightly spongy
state, thus creating a soft forged-like feel to each
shot.
